What is a CMS?
CMS stands for Content Management System. This is a web based interface for business owners to develop their own websites without having the technical knowledge required to build a website from scratch. While there are some pieces to website design that still requires programming knowledge, a CMS enable you to edit content and easily add pages.
While there are many CMS options to choose from, at Holistic Visibility we primarily work with OpenSource CMS tools.
What is OpenSource?
OpenSource means development of the CMS is done by a global network of volunteer programmers. This network works to make the CMS better, more secure with every iteration, and it also means the tool is free.
At Holistic Visibility we primarily work with Wordpress, Joomla and osCommerce.
Wordpress Websites
While Wordpress was originally designed to function as a blogging platform, many websites are now being designed around this CMS, and from the front end it is extremely difficult to tell these sites are managed with Wordpress.
Simple informational sites, with or without a blog, is the best use of this CMS tool. Basic functions include having content, images (including a gallery), sliders, and forms.
Joomla Websites
Joomla is a little more robust than Wordpress. While the CMS tool itself is free, the add-ons to expand the function of the website often cost. This platform is often considered more secure than Wordpress, and the add-ons are less likely to have hackable flaws being developers are being paid for their work.
Joomla sites are great when a website needs more expandability, needs more function than Wordpress offers, or when there is a simple ecommerce interface.
osCommerce Websites
osCommerce is our preferred choice for ecommerce CMS tools. Being designed specifically for ecommerce, osCommerce makes it easy to manage your products, inventory, shopping cart, and general content. If you’re aiming to become an effective Internet retailer, osCommerce is the CMS you’ll want to use.
